People save lives for reasons. @brooklyntrekkers is helping a patient fight cancer for the tenderest reason of all. The power of her example is an honor to share. ・・・
The day my mother died I was not by her side. I was traveling on a train from Brooklyn to Long Island 6 months pregnant to sit at her bedside. At about 7:58 AM I felt a pin prick of pain deep in my heart. The pin prick morphed into an ache, then a tear as though something were ripping and uncleaving itself from my heart. Ten minutes later I got the call. My mother had transitioned after a long and painful battle with cancer. .
In those moments on the train I would go through a wild array of emotions including regret, guilt, anger, sorrow, and loss. I was thankful her suffering had ended but I wasn't ready to let go. Until that call I was certain that at the very least, her eyes and my child's would meet but that simply didn't happen. I had to accept that I was powerless to change this outcome.
.
Earlier this year, I received a call from @bethematch telling me that I was a match with a leukemia patient in need of a Stem Cell Transplant. I learned that matches are made genetically and that minorities needing life saving matches struggle to find donors. When I got the call I didn't hesitate. I knew in that instant that I had the power and opportunity to do for another what I couldn't do for my mother. If I could help extend or save the life of someone's child, parent or sibling I would do it.
.
It could take up to two years or more for me to meet my recipient if the opportunity arises. Today I gave a second donation of white blood cells to help increase her chances and I'm telling you I would do it again in a heartbeat. I give in honor of my mother and for those in need of life savings matches. The process for both was was simple and I was done in four hours each time with a procedure as easy as donating platelets.
.
Think of your loved ones or those you've lost. What would you give to help them or someone in their situation? What if it only took 4 hours to do it?

Text CURE119 to 61474 to learn more. Save a life. Join the registry. Be a hero this world needs.
.
Thank You #nybloodcenter
