"Thanks to New York Blood Center (NYBC), I am alive today."

A Message From Ariel Fishman:

Thanks to New York Blood Center (NYBC), I am alive today.

On March 30, 2012, a taxi slammed into me while I was dropping my children off at school, crushing my lower legs. I was rushed to the hospital and where eventually underwent 11 surgeries over just the next three weeks alone, eventually losing my lower legs to amputation. I needed 70 life-saving units of blood to survive.

If 70 different people hadn’t taken an hour of their time to donate blood, and if the New York Blood Center didn’t have the resources and expertise to get that blood every day to people like me in need, I know that I wouldn’t be alive today.

The New York Blood Center is a nonprofit community organization that supplies more than 2,000 units of blood to New York-area hospitals every day. They’re not doing this for profit; they’re doing it because it is their mission.   It’s incumbent on all of us to make sure that the Blood Center continues to get the resources it needs to accomplish its life-saving work.

I am thankful each and every day for NYBC and its devotion to the thousands of lives they save each year… including mine.
